Biological Safety

The Biological Safety Office is responsible for programs related to control of exposure to bloodborne pathogens, biological waste, biological safety in the laboratory, medical monitoring, and food service safety.

The office inspects laboratories and workplaces, oversees the permitting and disposal of biohazardous waste, provides mandated training, and reviews cases of individuals who have a potential for occupational exposure from blood or other potentially infectious materials.

This office provides technical support for research grant proposal reviews, special student event reviews, and information on proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.

Medical Monitoring Programs have been developed to ensure the health and safety of researchers and workers at Florida State University. Each program is based on a hazard assessment of an individual’s exposure to different environmental conditions. Different areas covered by the Medical Monitoring Program are: the Medical Monitoring Program for Vertebrate Animal Exposure, research SCUBA divers, and respirator use.
